GORDON  RESIDENCE

The remodel of the first floor of this Scripps Ranch house included a new larger kitchen in a contemporary craftsmen style with a redo of the adjoining dining, family, and music/living rooms.  In the new design, the kitchen and dining room are flipped from their original locations and the southeast corner of the house punched out to pick up an additional 208 s.f. for the kitchen. With the removal of an existing wall and the addition of a large opening in the wall  separating the music/living room from the dining room, the first floor is opened up into one flowing space.  The new square kitchen has large windows on two sides with a higher band of windows wrapping three corners of the room providing views of the canyon walls that were limited with the original small windows.  The effect is to bring the kitchen into the beautiful garden the owners have nurtured since buying the house in the 1980s.  The kitchen is a wood box, paneled in warm quartersawn red oak, with an articulated red oak ceiling and cabinetry. The three adjacent areas - kitchen, dining, and family room - are defined by red oak ceiling features, each different, but composed of similar elements. In the living/music room, quartersawn walnut is used for the cabinetry and wall panels. The darker espresso-colored walnut is also used as an accent in the cabinetry in the other spaces and as the baseboard throughout. Furniture, including the dining table, end tables, and coffee tables, also were designed using the same two woods, with bands inlaid in the tops to mimic the half rounds at the wood ceilings. A durable copper grey slate in a 12” x 24” size  was used throughout on the floor complimenting the warm tones of the woodwork.
