WASH  RESIDENCE

For the remodel of this existing 1700 s.f. home just east of Little Italy and the airport, the design adds a second story of 1408 s.f. comprised of a master bedroom suite and studio, each with a roof terrace. Between the master bedroom at the front and the studio at the back are located the master bath and walk-in closet.  The bedroom and studio have sloped corrugated metal roof/ceilings that wrap down over the end walls to break down the scale of the addition. Clerestory windows at the high end of these roofs bring light into the studio and stair hall. Large corner windows and sliding glass doors at both the bedroom and studio open these spaces to the terraces and views beyond.  The bathtub with its slot window also looks out to the view.  At the end of the bedroom terrace, a high wall provides privacy from the neighboring house and has a linear fire feature built-in. In keeping with the existing colorful treatment of this graphic designer’s house, a strong color palette of orange and green stucco is used to differentiate the living spaces from the work/service spaces of the house, breaking down the scale further.  A cantilevered charcoal grey colored box containing the master shower intermediates between the two colors and sloped roof components.
