TRUMBO  RESIDENCE

Situated at the edge of a steep hillside in La Jolla, the project initially entailed reinforcing the slope with a new retaining wall off of which are built a deck with an enclosed workroom below.  The design scope expanded to include a remodel of both floors of this 2750 s.f. four bedroom house with a corresponding new exterior look. An additional 442 s.f. are added in the enlarging of the living room on the first floor, the home office over the garage, and the master bath at the rear.  A new larger kitchen opens to the family room and the rear patio and pool through a wall of glass. Above, three balconies project out from the canted yellow stucco wall framing them, each accessible from a bedroom with a canyon view.  The white lap siding of the master bath addition adds an accent piece to the composition and ties in with the white lap siding used on the canted wall of the workroom at the hillside.  The workroom, accessed by two stairs and a scissor lift, is partitioned into two spaces with a bath at one end. A slot window in the floor and wall that tilts out over the hillside frames the view down into the canyon.
