MILLER  RESIDENCE

Sited on a large parcel that runs down to a pebble beach at the end of West Sound on Orcas Island, the existing house was a shell with the upstairs unfinished and the downstairs only partially complete.  The whole house remodel involved reorganizing the plan to provide the new owners with a four bedroom, four bath house with a new exterior design to take full advantage of the view to Massacre Bay at the end of West Sound. From a raised driveway on a knoll, the house is entered over a bridge to the upper floor.  From the axis of the bridge one has a view through the house to the water beyond.  An unbroken band of windows on the south side of the upper main living floor provides panoramic views from the living, dining, kitchen, master bedrooml/bath, and children’s bedroom.  The north side of the house with its small punched openings contains the service spaces - walk-in closet, bathroom, laundry, powder room, pantry, and stair. Two bedrooms with baths, playroom, and office are set back behind an arcade providing weather protection on the lower level. A covered carport at one corner is accessible from this lower level.
